My GHD Flat Iron Review

This is my complete review of the GHD flat iron. This review is from my own personal experience and my goal is to give you unbiased, honest and helpful information about this product.

GHD is one of the most popular brands in the industry, and many women dream of having one. As you can see in my video, I was a little disappointed with the results. Maybe my expectations were a little too high, or maybe my hair type doesn’t work so well with the 1 inch plates, but for almost $200, I was expecting more. I think the biggest problem is the fixed temperature, this straightener just doesn’t get hot enough for my thick hair.

Bottom Line – If you have thick, long, curly or difficult hair, the GHD 1 inch flat iron is probably not for you. You may want to try a GHD with larger plates (which is also more expensive), or for $50 less, you can get a Sedu which worked FAR better on my hair than the GHD did. A Detailed Look At My GHD

ghd professional hair straightenerGHD flat irons are among the best in terms of quality.  They’re light and they have advanced ceramic heating plates.  Their flat irons are designed to tackle any kind of hair whether it’s a thick, frizzy mess or thin, straight and lifeless.  And you can do a lot with them, including straightening, curling or adding waves.

There are two things that I think really make GHD flat irons unique.  One is their floating plate technology.  What this means is that the plates shift slightly as you run them through your hair.  While most flat irons use tension and this is why you sometimes end up pulling hair, with GHD it’s all heat.  Your flat iron adapts to your hair while you’re styling it. This is a cool feature that really feels good as the iron slides through my hair.

One more thing I have to say about GHD flat irons is that they’re incredibly durable.  Some flat irons, even though they get the job done really well, seem a little bit weak and flimsy.  The plates start cracking and sliding around just a few months after using it.  Lots of people say in online reviews that GHD’s are extra tough and I have to agree.

(Please Note: I have purchased many of my hair care products online, and I have found that Folica is the best. They are fast, reliable, customer friendly and affordable. Their products are also guaranteed authentic and many of them come with extended warranties and free shipping.)

Using A GHD Flat Iron

GHD flat iron plates get really hot really fast.  I’d say it takes just about 10 seconds.  This is great for women who don’t have a whole lot of time to spend each morning on styling.  The plates also cool down really quickly.  The whole process of straightening your hair with a GHD flat iron takes just a couple of minutes.

The result is hair that’s soft, sleek and shiny.  One thing I really like is that your hair doesn’t get caught up in the iron.  This is because of the floating plate technology.  The whole process is smooth and you get your hair straight the first time through.

Other Cool Things About GHD

ghd protective plate guardsProbably one of the best things about GHD is their range of accessories.  These include items that are really useful like the protective plate guards.  You put these over the plates to make sure they don’t get damaged when the iron is moved.  There’s also a heat protector that offers an extra bit of damage prevention for your hair.  They have gift sets that include bags, brushes and mirrors.  And everything they sell has that ornate and classic GHD look.

They have all kinds of shapes, colors, designs and sizes for their flat irons.  Some of these colors are truly funky, especially the New Wave Limited Edition.  Each iron comes with a clutch bag that’s also attractive looking.  They also have mini-irons that you can keep in your bag for hair-related emergencies.

Safety Features

They also have safety features that keep you from burning yourself, your hair or the iron itself.  One of these is the sleep mode.  If it sits for a long time without being used, it shuts itself off automatically.  This is a nice safety feature and it also keeps the heated plates from damaging anything around it.

Their flat irons also have 360 degree swivel cords so that it’s easy to move around without getting tangled up.  A lot of irons don’t have these and the last thing you want to do is trip yourself when you’re holding a very hot hair styling tool in your hand.

Disadvantages Of GHD Flat Irons

I’ll be really honest with you; it was tough to think of disadvantages.  One thing I guess I’d mention is the fixed temperature setting.  It’s always set at 370 degrees Fahrenheit and a microprocessor inside the iron keeps it at this temperature.  They say that it’s a benefit because it keeps you from singeing your hair.  But if you like flat irons that have adjustable temperature settings, this would be a pretty major disadvantage.

Especially if you have very thin or delicate hair. You would probably be better off with one of these other straighteners that have a lower temperature setting, so your hair won’t get fried. Check out these: Sedu Flat Iron or Solia Flat Iron. These both have variable temperature settings.

Some reviews I read also said that GHD flat irons are too bulky and heavy.  I wouldn’t say that exactly, but with so many super-light irons that are so popular (like Solia, for example), I can see how some people would say GHD’s are a bit heavy.  I’d put it this way – they’re not super-light, but this straightener feels very well made, professional and durable.

Overall, I love my GHD flat iron.  It really gets the job done and there’s no burning of my hair.  The results are really straight and sleek.  Although I have to admit that I’m a sucker for all of the different designs they offer.
